SOTM: Alice Sun

Writer: Sabrina LoSabrina Lo

February brings yet another talented student–one who has been described to put “maximum effort in learning and practicing.” Although she is only a freshman, we congratulate Concert Orchestra cellist Alice Sun on her excellent work ethics that earned her the honor of being named February Student of the Month!

While most students started their music journey on the piano, Alice actually chose the viola in fourth grade. However, eventually it was the cello that drew her in.

“As I played the viola more, I didn’t really like it, so at the end of 5th grade, I decided to try something different,” said Alice. “Cello was the first thing that came into mind because too many people played the violin.”

As a musician now, Alice realizes that her view on music has changed since joining the orchestra in 6th grade, and today, the cello has had a tremendous emotional impact on her.

“Before, I just thought of music as something to listen to, but now I understand the emotions and effort behind it,” said Alice. “Playing the cello makes me feel very nonchalant. On a bad day, playing allows me to take control of my feelings and calm down.”

Moreover, Alice is deeply grateful to the AHS orchestra program for providing her with lasting memories and irreplaceable friendships.

“I love being part of the AHS orchestra program for many reasons,” explained Alice. “One is the socials and fun activities. None of my classes are like this. They are always very boring, but orchestra is as cool as a cucumber!”

She also mentions the field trips, her welcoming classmates, and a passionate environment. “We support each other, have fun together, and create an environment where everyone feels like they belong.”

Outside of school, Alice is in Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra (PYSO) and does Certificate of Merit Examinations. She loves playing sports, especially softball and basketball. Alice would like to pursue a career in the medical field but says, “No matter what career I choose, I believe music will always stay with me.”

Alice is just one of many exceptionally multifaceted orchestra students, and there is no doubt that she will continue to achieve great things throughout high school and beyond. Congratulations again Alice!
