Have you wondered what Arcadia Orchestra alumni do after graduation? For Sala Yu, an alumni who currently studies entertainment design at ArtCenter College of Design, college has been a major transition for her. While she “[went] with the flow” in high school, college has introduced her to new responsibilities, a more structured schedule, and many opportunities for growth and exploration.
Sala describes her college life as “loads busier” than high school, but the extra responsibilities come with the freedom to manage her own time. She now relies on planned schedules and calendars, a big shift from her high school approach. Creating a structured schedule has allowed her to balance her coursework, social life, and music-related activities. Even with her organized schedule, she still leaves room for spontaneity, finding ways to incorporate planned commitments with spur-of-the-moment hangouts. She notes that this balance has helped her manage the busy demands of college without feeling like she’s sacrificing fun.
Music has always been a significant part of Sala’s life. As a result she continues to pursue it passionately, though her studies aren’t focused on music. From the AHS orchestras, she built her foundation in music and friendships. Some of her close friendships were formed through orchestra and continue beyond high school. “Jamming with friends has become a fun pastime of mine,” Sala says, describing her favorite way to connect with both new and old friends. Furthermore, music has also opened up new opportunities, as Sala has expanded her network to include not only friends but also teachers, coworkers, and even people she meets casually at events. Whether she’s meeting a stranger at an event or reuniting with high school friends, music is a shared passion that helps maintain these relationships.
Even though ArtCenter doesn’t offer a music program, Sala found a way to express her passion by joining the PCC orchestra. Playing in an ensemble again became highlights of her week, as she missed the fun and teamwork when performing as a group. Additionally, Sala teaches string instruments to elementary and middle school students privately and in-schools, and she even gets hired to play gigs.
Sala’s experience exemplifies how much she values both her creativity and her passion for music. She balances a rigorous art program with teaching and playing music. With her love for music and a future in concept art, Sala follows her passions and interests, proving that it is possible to pursue multiple paths and find success along the way.
